I used to love making creative videos about Atlanta. When I got my first gimbal, I was incredibly inspired to get out and shoot as much as I could. I’d head into the city, capture footage from all around town, and then edit it in a fun, energetic, and stylized way.

These videos were always something I really enjoyed making. It felt like creating a mini music video, and it gave me the freedom to experiment with more creative editing techniques than I typically get to use on client projects. I haven’t made one of these videos in a while, but writing this post might be the push I need to get back into it.

When I was working full-time, the Head Producer at Radiant3 really appreciated the style of these videos. For the company’s 10-year anniversary, he asked me to create a series of them. I spent about a week filming around Atlanta, collecting shots from different neighborhoods and landmarks. Then I went back to the editing bay at the office and got to work. The goal was to make each video as visually engaging as possible.

At the time, adding lens flares in post was a trendy editing technique, and the Producer was a big fan of it. I remember him telling me that there should always be at least one visible on screen at all times. In some cases, it really worked. It added energy and a bit of stylization to the footage. But looking back, I wish I had dialed it back in a few places. Still, it was a great creative challenge and I learned a lot in the process.

Now that I’ve been reflecting on it, I think it might be time to get back out there and make another one of these. It’s the kind of project that reminds me why I got into video in the first place.
