I’ve had the opportunity to film multiple videos for The New York Times, and one of the first projects I worked on was a piece called The Economics of Home Depot. For this video, we interviewed the Chief Financial Officer of Home Depot inside one of their stores. It was a unique experience getting to set up lights and cameras right in the middle of a functioning Home Depot.

One of the biggest challenges was that the store remained open during the interview. That meant we had to work around customers, employees, and all the ambient noise you’d expect in a busy retail space. Several times we had to stop recording because a loud cart rolled by or someone was standing awkwardly directly in frame.

I shot the interview using two cameras. One was a wider angle that showed more of the store in focus in the background. The second was a tighter shot with a longer lens, which allowed me to throw the background completely out of focus and isolate the subject. This gave us two very different looks to work with in the final edit.
