Earlier this year, an architectural firm reached out because they were looking for a drone pilot in Atlanta. They had just finished construction on a brand new building for Spelman College and wanted to capture video footage to show it off.

We started the shoot early in the morning to catch golden hour. The college is located right outside of Atlanta, so I was able to get some great-looking drone shots with the city in the background.

I used my DJI Mavic 4 Pro, which was brand new to me at the time. The footage from this drone is beautiful, and I’m really happy with how everything turned out.

The footage looks great, but a few things could have been improved with better planning. I was not in charge of the schedule, but one thing that would have made the project even stronger would have been filming before sunset instead of before sunrise. The producer who hired me had to fly out that same day, otherwise we would have filmed in the evening.

Because we filmed early in the day, the building was still cast in shadow. It would have looked even better with warm golden-hour light hitting the face of the building. Also, since this was a college building, it would have been nice to see more students walking around and interacting with the space. We ended up filming during a time when the streets were mostly empty.

After a few hours outside, we went inside and I filmed the interior of the building with a gimbal. This helped capture more of the architecture, the design of the space, and the details of the finished construction.

Here is an edit I made with the drone footage:
