LED Wall Commercial: Gaffer in Atlanta for a Studio Shoot
I worked on a pretty cool commercial shoot recently. The commercial was for a phone charging product and it was shot with an LED wall background. I was the Gaffer on this project, the studio and the entire film crew was in Atlanta.
The LED wall was used to put the actors back in time. So the actress dressed up in early 1900s clothes and the background was New York City at the turn of the 19th century.
Ive worked on sets with LED walls before, but its always exciting to watch. With the right camera settings and lighting these LED walls work like magic.
For this shoot, I supplied my lighting gear, including my Aputure 700X, Aputure 400X, Litepanels Gemini 1x1s, and my 8x8 diffusion frame. There was also a grip truck on this shoot that supplied the stands, negative fill, and a few other pieces of grip gear.
The lighting was a fairly simple 3 point lighting setup. The part that was challenging was changing the lights to match the lighting in the virtual backgrounds so the actors fit naturally into the scenes. For example: if the sun on the backdrop was shining on the left side, we had to swap our key light to left. We had about 5 different scenes and we had to adjust the lighting for each new backdrop.
Everything went smoothly, it was a great shoot. I love working in studios like this and hope more gigs like this will be coming my way soon!
